January 28       ABCD – OBX?

Atlantic’s Best Coastal Destination – Outer Banks

by Claude Kelly

Having visited beaches from Maine to Florida, Florida to Texas and California to Washington, it was only natural that sooner or later Kathy and I would end up at the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  The irony is that we made our first trip there in 2007 and now we’re hooked for life.

Our show is in three parts: the North Shore area from Corolla to Nags Head; Roanoke Island; and the South Shore area from Nags Head to Ocracoke Island.  If you are expecting surf and sand, you will be neither disappointed nor bored, since the variations in their topography and presentation is often unique and breathtaking.  You will never be far from piers, lighthouses, marinas, bridges, and other man-made wonders but Mother Nature is still the champion with her sand dune and seashell art, wave action, birds and animals and spectacular lighting at sunrise and sunset.  When Man and Mother Nature combine efforts at such places as the Elizabethan Gardens, Jockey Ridge, Wright Brothers Memorial and the Wildlife Natural Refuge sites, it all comes together quite nicely.  And when Man mounts his surfboards and kite sails and challenges the wind and the sea, even more spectacular things occur.

Come join us on our three mid-April visits to the wonderful OBX.

February 4       Norway – Land of the Midnight Sun

                        by Steve Falling

Norway is a place of indescribable beauty and is a photographer’s delight.  Naturally the sea has been a major factor in the history of Norway, from the time of the Vikings to the fishing and oil industries of today.  The Norwegian coast is especially renowned for its many long, narrow inlets of the sea called fjords.  The many glacier-carved valleys are especially picturesque due to the numerous waterfalls, abundant flowers and well-kept farms.

You are invited to relive a trip which will take you from Oslo in the south to the Fallingen farms of the middle lowlands, to breathtaking Geirangerfjord, then north to the city of Trondheim, and finally to Mo I Rana and the arctic circle.  Then we return to the southwestern coast to visit Bergen and cruise upon the famous Sognefjord to the tiny town of Flåm.  A ride on one of the world’s steepest and most scenic railway lines, the Flåm Railway, returns us to the high plateau and a train ride back to Oslo.

February 18   Antarctica – Land of Extremes

By Chris Duncan  naturallywildphoto.com

Antarctica is the coldest, driest, highest, windiest, and most southern continent on earth. Join Chris Duncan for an evening of photography and discussion about this unique area of the world. Chris will be spending 25 days on the stormy and unforgiving Southern Seas to visit several stops in the Antarctica region. His journey will take him to the Falklands Islands to photograph and its diverse bird population including Rockhopper and Magellenic penguins. South Georgian Island will be next on the agenda, visiting some of the largest penguin colonies in the world. Over 100,000 King Penguins group in colonies on the island. The journey continues through the South Orkneys onto the continent of Antarctica.  The dramatic scenery of Antarctica with its tower Mountains, massive glaciers, and beautiful iceberg filled channels awaits photo exploration. Wildlife in this serene and stark landscape is also available, with many species of whales, seals, and sealion, and, of course, penguins. Chris looks forward to sharing both the adventure and photography from this remote area with you.
